Top UK Fintech Companies 2026: Revolut, Monzo, Wise and More
The leading UK fintech companies in 2026, from Revolut, Monzo and Wise to Checkout.com, Zopa and OakNorth, compared by customers, revenue and profit.

Key takeaways
- Revolut is the UK's largest fintech by revenue and profit, with £4.5 billion of 2025 revenue, £1.7 billion before tax and a full UK banking licence since March 2026.
- Most UK fintech leaders are now profitable even though UK fintech investment fell to a decade low of £1.8 billion in the first half of 2026.
- The UK stablecoin regime opened its FCA gateway on September 30, 2026 and goes live on October 25, 2027, with stricter Bank of England rules for systemic issuers.
A fishmonger at Kirkgate Market in Leeds takes card payments on a terminal from one fintech, banks her takings with a second, pays her Norwegian supplier through a third, and keeps her rainy-day pot in a savings app run by a fourth. Fifteen years ago every one of those jobs belonged to a high-street bank. In 2026 the UK has the deepest bench of independent fintech companies in Europe, several now profitable and fully licensed, even as fresh venture money into the sector has fallen to its lowest level in a decade.
How did we choose the leading UK fintech companies for 2026?
We selected UK fintech companies for 2026 on measurable criteria as of October 2026: customers, revenue and profit in the latest reported year, payment or lending volume, licences held, and valuation where disclosed. We grouped them by category rather than ranking them, because a challenger bank, a payment processor and a business lender earn money in very different ways.
The funding climate is the backdrop. UK fintech investment fell to £1.8 billion across 205 deals in the first half of 2026, down about two-thirds from £5.0 billion a year earlier and the lowest since KPMG began the series in 2016, according to KPMG's August 2026 release. The largest deal was a £543 million private equity investment in Ebury. Thin funding makes profits matter more, and most of this list now has them.
Which UK digital banks are largest in 2026?
By revenue and customers, Revolut is the UK's largest fintech in 2026, with £4.5 billion of 2025 revenue, £1.7 billion of pre-tax profit and 68.3 million retail customers worldwide. Monzo is second, with £1.7 billion of revenue and 15.2 million customers in the year to March 2026, and Starling is the most profitable per pound of revenue among the three.
Revolut
Revolut's 2025 revenue rose 46% to £4.5 billion and profit before tax rose 57% to £1.7 billion, with 68.3 million retail and 767,000 business customers, according to Euronews. Its last funding round valued it at $75 billion. The licence saga is over: Revolut won a restricted UK banking licence in July 2024 and the Prudential Regulation Authority let it leave mobilisation in March 2026, after about 20 months, as Tech.eu reported. It has about 13 million UK customers.
Monzo
Monzo's revenue rose 39% to £1.7 billion in the year to March 2026, with adjusted profit before tax of £172.6 million, 15.2 million customers and deposits of £25.7 billion, up 55%, per Payment Expert. It launched in Ireland in April 2026 on a Central Bank of Ireland licence and closed its US operations.
Starling Bank
Starling is the exception to the growth story. Revenue fell to £887 million in the year to March 2026 and pre-tax profit dipped 3% to £217 million as interest income dropped with rates, while accounts rose to 6.2 million, according to Tech.eu. Its software arm, Engine, signed Scotiabank's Tangerine as its first North American client.

What does revenue per customer reveal? A worked example
Dividing revenue by customers in the latest year shows Revolut earns about £66 per customer, Monzo about £112 and Starling about £143. Revolut's lower figure reflects a huge international base of lighter users, yet it converts revenue into profit far more efficiently, with a margin near 38% against roughly 10% at Monzo.
The arithmetic: Revolut's £4.5 billion over 68.3 million retail customers is about £66 each. Monzo's £1.7 billion over 15.2 million is about £112. Starling's £887 million over 6.2 million accounts is about £143. On profit, Revolut's £1.7 billion is 38% of revenue, Starling's £217 million is about 24% and Monzo's adjusted £172.6 million is about 10%.
Two lessons follow. Starling earns the most per customer because many of its accounts are main business accounts, and 56% of its SME customers use it as their primary bank. But it is also the most exposed to falling rates, which is why its revenue fell while the others grew. Monzo, still investing in Europe and mortgages, has the most room to widen margins if those bets work.
The UK's three big digital banks have the same app-shaped front end and three entirely different businesses behind it.
How is the UK regulating stablecoins in 2026?
The UK published final stablecoin rules in 2026. The FCA regulates all UK issuers, opening its authorisation gateway on September 30, 2026, and the regime goes live on October 25, 2027. The Bank of England adds stricter rules for issuers deemed systemic, including a £40 billion guardrail per coin, having dropped earlier proposed holding limits.
Under the FCA's policy statement, issuers must fully back coins, keep at least 10% in core assets such as on-demand deposits and short-term government debt, and redeem by the end of the next business day, according to Payment Expert. Systemic issuers must hold 30% at the central bank and 70% in short-dated gilts. ClearBank's chief executive argued the rules still make bank issuance hard to run profitably. Our detailed guide to the UK stablecoin regime covers the full rulebook.
What should you watch in UK fintech next?
The key dates for UK fintech are the FCA stablecoin gateway, open from September 30, 2026 to February 28, 2027, the regime's go-live on October 25, 2027, and Revolut's aim of 100 million customers by mid-2027. Whether funding recovers from a decade low will decide which younger London fintechs reach the scale of this list.
- Now to February 28, 2027: FCA authorisation gateway for stablecoin issuers and crypto firms.
- October 25, 2027: UK stablecoin and cryptoasset regime goes live.
- Mid-2027: Revolut's target of 100 million customers, alongside its pending US banking licence application filed in March 2026.
- Listings: Wise's Nasdaq move is a test case. A strong run would encourage Revolut, Monzo or Starling to list in New York rather than London.
- Remittance pricing: Competition from Wise and Revolut keeps pushing down the cost of sending money from Britain, as our UK to India money transfer guide shows.
