Key takeaways

  • Ripple Payments bundles messaging, settlement in XRP or RLUSD, and local payout, and Ripple says it had processed more than $95 billion in total by December 2025.
  • Ripple the company and XRP the asset are separate: a bank can use Ripple Payments with RLUSD or fiat and never hold XRP.
  • SWIFT already gets 90% of payments to the destination bank within an hour, so Ripple's real contest is the last mile, pre-funding costs and smaller corridors.

A finance manager at a textile exporter in Tiruppur waits on a $48,000 payment from a buyer in Dubai. The buyer's bank sends it on a Thursday afternoon. It passes through a correspondent in New York, sits over a US weekend, and lands on Monday with a lifting fee deducted that nobody quoted in advance. Ripple has spent more than a decade arguing that this journey should take minutes rather than days. In 2026, with a national trust bank approval, a stablecoin of its own and several billion dollars of acquisitions behind it, the company is closer to testing that claim at scale than it has ever been.

What is Ripple Payments in 2026?

Ripple Payments is Ripple's cross-border payments service for banks, payment companies and businesses. It combines what used to be RippleNet messaging and On-Demand Liquidity, letting customers send value using XRP, the RLUSD stablecoin or fiat through a network of payout partners. As of December 2025, Ripple said the network had processed more than $95 billion in total volume.

The product has changed shape. Earlier, RippleNet was mainly a messaging network that banks used alongside traditional nostro accounts, while On-Demand Liquidity used XRP to avoid pre-funding. Today Ripple sells an end-to-end service: it can collect funds, convert them, move them across a blockchain and pay out locally, holding the licences itself. In a May 2025 release on its UAE customers, Ripple described more than 60 licences and registrations and over 90 payout markets, covering more than 90% of daily FX markets. For the broader context of the company's year, see our overview of Ripple in 2026.

Note what the volume figure is: cumulative, self-reported and across all years. It is not an annual number, and Ripple does not break it down by corridor or settlement asset.

How does a Ripple payment work, step by step?

In a typical Ripple Payments transfer in 2026, the sending institution submits a payment, Ripple or a partner converts the local currency into a digital asset such as XRP or RLUSD, the asset moves across a blockchain in seconds, and a payout partner converts it into the destination currency and credits the recipient. The sending institution never needs a pre-funded account abroad.

  1. Instruction. A bank or payment firm, say a UAE remittance company, sends a payment request through Ripple's API with amount, currency and beneficiary details.
  2. Quote and compliance. Ripple returns an FX quote and runs screening. Because Ripple holds licences in the relevant markets, it can take on part of the compliance work.
  3. On-ramp. Dirhams are converted into a digital asset. For XRP routes this happens through exchange liquidity; for RLUSD routes, through issuance or purchase of the stablecoin.
  4. Transfer. The asset moves on the XRP Ledger or another supported chain. Settlement on the ledger takes seconds and runs around the clock.
  5. Off-ramp and payout. A partner in the destination market sells the asset for local currency and pays the beneficiary through a domestic rail such as a bank transfer or mobile wallet.

The economic point of steps three to five is pre-funding. In correspondent banking, a sender must keep money parked in accounts abroad, or pay a bank that does, so that a payment can be credited on arrival. Ripple's model replaces those idle balances with assets bought and sold on demand.

What is the difference between XRP and RLUSD in Ripple settlement?

XRP is a floating-price digital asset used as a bridge between two currencies, so the customer is exposed to its price for the seconds the payment is in flight. RLUSD is a dollar stablecoin issued by Ripple under a New York trust charter, so there is no price movement in transit. In 2026 Ripple Payments supports both, and corridor liquidity decides which is cheaper.

RLUSD launched on 17 December 2024 on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum, backed by dollar deposits, US government bonds and cash equivalents, with monthly attestations promised, according to Ripple's launch release. Its market value passed $1 billion within a year and stood at about $2.4 billion in mid-October 2026, per DefiLlama. That makes it a mid-sized stablecoin, far behind USDT and USDC, as our stablecoin companies list shows.

For banks, the stablecoin route answers the most common objection to XRP: treasury teams do not want price risk on their balance sheet, even for minutes. For XRP-based routes, the argument is depth: in corridors where XRP trades actively against both currencies, using it can avoid two stablecoin conversions. Neither choice is a statement about the asset's future value, and readers should not treat it as one.

Is Ripple the same as XRP?

No. Ripple is a private US company that sells payments, custody, treasury and brokerage services. XRP is a digital asset native to the XRP Ledger, an open-source blockchain that Ripple helped create but does not own. Ripple holds a large amount of XRP and releases one billion XRP from escrow each month, which links the two closely without making them the same thing.

The distinction has legal weight. The US Securities and Exchange Commission's case against Ripple ended on 7 August 2025, when both sides dismissed their appeals, leaving in place a final judgment with a civil penalty of $125,035,150 and an injunction against violating securities registration rules, according to the SEC's litigation release. The case concerned how Ripple sold XRP, not whether the XRP Ledger could be used for payments.

It also matters commercially. A bank can use Ripple Payments without ever touching XRP, by settling in RLUSD or fiat. And anyone can build on the XRP Ledger without Ripple, as several stablecoin issuers do. Our comparison of Stellar's payments blockchain, which has a similar split between a foundation and an open network, is a useful parallel.

What licences and acquisitions does Ripple have?

By late 2025 Ripple said it held more than 60 licences and registrations, including a New York trust charter for RLUSD and a Dubai Financial Services Authority licence. It received conditional OCC approval for a national trust bank in December 2025 and a full MiCA licence in the EU in July 2026. It has spent billions buying firms in brokerage, treasury and stablecoin payments.

The figures come from The Block's report on the $40 billion round, which also noted more than $4 billion of strategic investments in 2025; Ripple's Rail announcement, which said Rail was expected to handle over 10% of a $36 billion B2B stablecoin market in 2025 (the deal completed on 11 August 2025); Ripple's October 2025 GTreasury announcement; and Ripple's December 2025 release on the trust bank. In 2026 Ripple added customers including Convera in March and South Korea's Jeonbuk Bank in August, and CEO Brad Garlinghouse has set a target of a $1 billion annual operating revenue run rate by the end of 2026, excluding XRP sales.

Ripple's bet is no longer a token. It is a licensed, vertically integrated payments company that happens to own one.

How does Ripple compare with SWIFT correspondent banking?

SWIFT is a messaging network, while correspondent banks move the money. Ripple Payments bundles messaging, settlement and payout into one service. SWIFT says 90% of payments on its network reach the destination bank within an hour, but only 43% reach the end customer that fast, which is where Ripple claims an edge.

Those SWIFT figures, announced in October 2024 and reported by PYMNTS, already beat the G20 target of 75% of payments processed within an hour by 2027 at the bank-to-bank level. The weak point is the last mile, where domestic processing, compliance checks and cut-off times slow delivery. SWIFT's ISO 20022 migration is designed to reduce that friction with richer data.

Ripple's advantage is strongest where correspondent banking is thinnest: smaller currencies, weekend payments and corridors where pre-funding is expensive. Its disadvantage is reach. SWIFT connects nearly every bank in the world; Ripple's 90-plus payout markets depend on local partners, and in some countries regulation limits what digital assets can be used. In India, for instance, Ripple's publicly announced deployments have been bank-led, such as LuLu Exchange and Federal Bank connecting through RippleNet Cloud in 2021 for transfers from LuLu's 76 UAE branches.

A worked example: what the cost gap means

Ripple does not publish a public price list, so a direct fee comparison is not possible. What can be measured is the cost Ripple says it can undercut. The World Bank's global average for sending $200 was 6.36% in the third quarter of 2025. On a $200 transfer, that is $12.72. On $1,000 sent as five $200 transfers over a year, the same average adds up to $63.60.

Now take the Tiruppur exporter's $48,000 invoice. Suppose, purely as an illustration, that the correspondent route charges a $40 combined fee plus 0.5% hidden in the FX rate. That is $40 plus $240, or $280, and three days of float. A provider that settled in minutes for, say, 0.3% all-in would cost $144 and release the cash the same day. Those percentages are hypothetical; the point is that savings come mainly from the FX spread and pre-funding, not the headline fee. Our cost of sending money home report shows how to read a quote.

Can Ripple Payments be used for India and the UAE?

Ripple Payments has a licensed base in the UAE through its DFSA licence, granted in March 2025, and announced Zand Bank and Mamo as UAE customers in May 2025. For India, deployments have run through banks and licensed money transfer firms, since the user receives rupees through the domestic banking system rather than holding any digital asset.

The Gulf-to-India corridor is one of the largest in the world, and India received $135.46 billion in remittances in 2024-25, according to the RBI. That size is why every network wants a share. For senders, the practical question is not whether a provider uses Ripple behind the scenes, but the total cost and delivery time quoted. Our guide to UAE to India money transfer compares providers on those terms.

What should you watch next?

The developments most likely to change Ripple Payments over the coming year are its national trust bank moving to a final charter, its push to hit a $1 billion revenue run rate by end-2026, EU expansion under its July 2026 MiCA licence, and US market structure legislation that would define XRP's status.

  • Revenue target, December 2026. Ripple's year-end run-rate goal excludes XRP sales, so it will be a test of whether payments, custody, treasury and brokerage can stand alone.
  • Trust bank charter. A final OCC charter would put RLUSD under federal supervision alongside NYDFS oversight.
  • EU rollout. MiCA passporting from Luxembourg lets Ripple serve customers across the EU. Watch for named European bank customers.
  • US crypto market structure law. Senate progress on the CLARITY Act, after a procedural vote scheduled for 15 September 2026, would affect how XRP and other tokens are classified. Our Ripple vs Stellar comparison will track the impact.
