Key takeaways

  • Total stablecoin supply was about $306 billion in October 2026, roughly flat for the year after peaking near $321 billion in May.
  • USDT and USDC together hold about 84% of supply, while Ethereum and Tron host most of it by chain.
  • Genuine stablecoin payments are small relative to raw transfer volume but grew 42% in the first eight months of 2026.

Judged by its headline number alone, 2026 was a dull year for stablecoins. Total supply opened the year at roughly $308 billion, touched a record of about $321 billion in April and May and slipped back to around $306 billion by mid-October, according to DefiLlama. Look underneath that flat line, though, and almost every measure of real use went up. This report pulls the main numbers into one place and explains which ones actually matter.

The float: from $27 billion to $300 billion in five years

The long view is still remarkable. Year-end figures from DefiLlama, compiled by Transak, show the market growing roughly elevenfold since 2020, with two years of retreat in the middle.

The 2026 pattern deserves a closer look. Supply peaked near $321 billion in May, then June brought the steepest monthly decline since the Terra crash of 2022. Analysts tracking the quarter put the drop down to cooling crypto trading and lower demand for collateral on exchanges, not to any loss of faith in stablecoins as payment instruments. That distinction matters: the float shrank, but the activity riding on it did not.

A methodology note before going further. Trackers disagree at the margin because they include or exclude different tokens. On 14 October 2026, for instance, rwa.xyz listed total stablecoin value at about $293 billion, several billion below other counts. Treat any single figure as a range of a few percent.

Who issues it: two companies, about 84 percent

Concentration is the defining feature of this market. Tether's USDT stood at about $184 billion in early October 2026, roughly 60% of total supply. Circle's USDC ended June at $73.3 billion. Together they hold around 84% of everything in circulation, and the top five issuers held about 89% in the first quarter.

Below them sits a crowded tail: Sky's USDS and legacy DAI, World Liberty Financial's USD1, Ethena's USDe, Paxos's USDG, PayPal's PYUSD and Ripple's RLUSD, each between roughly half a percent and three percent of the market as of August 2026. Some of that tail is fragile. Ethena's USDe shrank from about $14.7 billion before the October 2025 liquidation cascade to about $6.3 billion two months later. We compare the two leaders in detail in USDT vs USDC.

Where it lives: supply by chain

DefiLlama data cited on 25 September 2026 ranked the main networks this way: Ethereum about $145.9 billion, Tron about $94.1 billion, Solana a record $16.6 billion, BNB Chain about $13.3 billion and Base about $5.1 billion. Ethereum's share has fallen from above 90% in 2020 to roughly half today, though its dollar balance has grown enormously. Tron is effectively a USDT network, used heavily for retail and cross-border transfers where low fees matter more than anything else.

The chain map is starting to move again because of purpose-built payment networks such as Stripe's Tempo and Circle's Arc, both live in 2026. We compare fees and settlement times in our guide to the best blockchains for stablecoin payments.

How much it moves: three numbers, three meanings

Volume is where stablecoin statistics get abused. There are at least three honest ways to measure it, and they differ by orders of magnitude.

  • Raw onchain transfers. a16z crypto counted about $46 trillion in stablecoin transactions over the year to late 2025. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, transfers topped $28 trillion, but around three quarters of that was bot activity.
  • Adjusted volume. Stripping out bots and repeated internal hops, a16z put the figure nearer $9 trillion, up 87% on the year before.
  • Actual payments. A joint analysis by McKinsey and Artemis found about $390 billion of genuine payments in 2025, around 0.02% of global payment flows. Business-to-business transfers made up $226 billion of it.

Our read: the third number is the one that tells you whether stablecoins are becoming money people spend, and it is growing quickly. Identified payments reached at least $401 billion in the first eight months of 2026, up 42% on the same period of 2025. Standard Chartered also noted in March 2026 that the average stablecoin now changes hands about six times a month, double the pace of two years earlier. More use from a flat float is exactly what you would expect if the asset is shifting from parking spot to payment rail. The details are in our 2026 payments trends piece.

The float went sideways in 2026. The payments built on top of it did not.

Forecasts: what the banks expect, and what that implies

The big institutional forecasts cluster around $2 trillion within a few years.

  • US Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee (April 2025): about $2 trillion by 2028, up from roughly $240 billion at the time, according to BeInCrypto's summary.
  • Standard Chartered: $2 trillion by 2028, reaffirmed in March 2026, with about $1 trillion of extra demand for US Treasury bills along the way, as reported by The Block.
  • Citi: a revised base case of $1.9 trillion by 2030 and a bull case of $4 trillion, published in September 2025.

Some simple arithmetic puts these in perspective. Getting from about $306 billion in October 2026 to $2 trillion by the end of 2028 would require supply to multiply roughly 6.5 times in just over two years, or about 130% a year. This year's growth so far is close to zero. The forecasts may still prove right, since a single large shift, such as banks or card networks moving settlement balances onchain, could add hundreds of billions quickly. But they are bets on a step change, not extrapolations of the current trend.

What to watch into 2027

  1. GENIUS Act implementation. The US law takes effect no later than 18 January 2027. Final rules will decide how much room issuers and their partners have to share reserve income. See our explainer on GENIUS and MiCA.
  2. Open USD. The OUSD token launched on 30 September 2026 backed by Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify and Coinbase. Its early volume will show whether distribution partners can dent the USDT and USDC duopoly.
  3. Bank tokens. A consortium of 21 banks plans a dollar stablecoin for the first half of 2027.
  4. USDC versus USDT. USDC drives most of the rise in velocity; USDT dominates low-velocity savings use in emerging markets. Which one grows faster tells you which use case is winning.
