Bharat Connect Explained: 3 Billion Bills a Year and How NRIs Pay Them
Bharat Connect (formerly BBPS) handled about 3.05 billion bill payments in 2025. How it works, what it covers and how NRIs pay Indian bills from overseas.

Key takeaways
- Bharat Connect (formerly BBPS) handled about 3.05 billion bill payments in 2025.
- It covers 22,000+ billers across 25+ categories, from electricity to school fees.
- NRIs have been able to pay Indian bills directly from abroad since 2022.
If you've paid an electricity bill in India through your bank app, Paytm, PhonePe or a corner shop in the last few years, you've almost certainly used Bharat Connect without knowing it. It's one of the most important pieces of India's payment system that nobody talks about at dinner.
What is Bharat Connect?
Bharat Connect is India's national bill-payment network. It used to be called the Bharat Bill Payment System, or BBPS, and was renamed at the Global Fintech Fest in 2024. It's run by NPCI Bharat BillPay, a subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India, the same organisation behind UPI.
Think of it as a common language between billers and the apps people pay from. An electricity company plugs in once. After that, every bank, wallet and payment app connected to the network can fetch its bills and pay them, with instant confirmation and a standard receipt.
What can you pay through it?
The list has grown well beyond utilities. Today it covers electricity, water, piped gas, LPG bookings, mobile postpaid, broadband, DTH, insurance premiums, loan repayments, credit cards, FASTag, school and college fees, municipal taxes, housing society dues, subscriptions and more. Recurring payments can be set up as standing instructions, so things like insurance or a mutual fund instalment pay themselves.

How it works, in four steps
- You choose a biller in any connected app and enter your customer number.
- The app fetches the bill live from the biller: amount, due date, name on the account.
- You pay by UPI, card, net banking or wallet.
- The biller gets confirmation instantly, and you get a reference number that both sides recognise if anything goes wrong.
That last point matters more than it sounds. Because every payment carries a standard reference, complaints and refunds follow a common process instead of depending on each company's customer service.
Paying Indian bills from abroad
Since September 2022, Non-Resident Indians have been able to pay Indian bills directly from overseas through approved partners, without first moving money into a relative's bank account. Banks and exchange houses in the Gulf, the UK, Canada and elsewhere have built services on top of this, and the network expanded the scope of cross-border transactions in 2024.
For families, this is a quiet revolution. A daughter in Dubai can pay her parents' electricity bill in Kochi directly. A son in Toronto can clear his sister's college fees in Pune before the deadline. The money doesn't stop in anyone's account along the way.
The best thing about Bharat Connect is that most people don't know they're using it. That's what good infrastructure looks like.
What's still hard
- The cross-border leg. Bharat Connect handles the Indian side beautifully. Getting money from abroad into India still runs through the traditional remittance system, with its fees and exchange-rate margins.
- Visibility for families. Most apps abroad let you pay one bill at a time. Few show you a household's full picture: what's due, what's paid, what's coming.
- Fragmented choice. Each overseas provider supports a different set of countries and categories.
Where this is heading
India has shown the world what a national bill network can do. The next step is joining it to fast, low-cost global rails, so that paying a bill in India from anywhere feels as simple as paying one at home. Other countries are watching closely, and several are building their own versions.
